Really? Doughnuts? And Running? How? Ryan, Daniel Island
Yes, Ryan, doughnuts and running. It’s pretty simple, really. Krispy Kreme is conveniently located exactly halfway into the 5k. If you’ve been running your fastest (and why wouldn’t you), you’re also starting to run out of energy by the time you get there. A nice jolt of sugar will provide all of the nutrition you need to finish in record time.
How many doughnuts do I have to eat? Jessica, CofC
Great question Jessica! It’s tough to say, really. If you’re an individual challenger, and you want a chance at winning the grand prize, we hate to be the bearer of deliciously bad news, but you’re going to have to throw down a dozen at the turnaround or your time won’t count. If, however, you’re on a team, you’ll split the dozen with your teammates. On a team of 6? You each eat two. A team of 12? One doughnut apiece. Of course, both individuals and teams have the option to buy down the number of doughnuts they have to shove through their faces. For an individual, every $25 raised is one less doughnut. For a team, it’s doubled. Every $50 raised is one less doughnut your team has to eat.
Are costumes encouraged? Ashley, Mt. Pleasant
Ashley, Ashley, Ashley. What a silly question. We really can’t think of any occasion in life where a costume would not be encouraged. Especially if you’re on a team. Some things to consider when designing your costume:
- Wind Resistance – If you plan on winning it’s probably not best to dress as a giant cube. Too much surface area.
- Sticky-finger proofness – Hot Krispy Kreme doughnuts, while delicious, tend to be a bit sticky. We recommend some sort of polyester blend for a quick and easy place to wipe your hands.
- Breathability – It is a race, after all. It’s important to not wear a heavy costume and mask with too little ventilation.
- Head bands, wrist bands, striped socks – Functional, easily color coordinated, and never out of style.
What can I win? Jeff, Bee St.
Just how fast do you think you are, Jeff? There are going to be a lot of runners, each one hoping to take home the grandest of prizes. The Great Golden Doughnut? It could be yours. A free pitcher of Mimosas at the After Party? You’ve got a chance, at least – if you start training now. When you think about it, Jeff, winning the race isn’t necessarily what you want to do. There are some instances where it’s just better to take it easy and go slow. The Green Way can be beautiful in April. How many lowcountry floral species can you identify? You’ll probably miss a few if you’re running at break-neck speed.
Where do we park? Melanie, Folly Beach
Hi Melanie. Runners will be leaving from the back of the South Windermere parking lot (near Earth Fare). You can find a space there. If you get there early enough and are looking for a pre-race boost, run into the Starbucks and ask if they sell caffeine.
What’s this about an After Party? Mark, Isle of Palms
Here’s the deal, Mark. The fun isn’t over just because the race is. We’ll all head downtown to Taco Boy. 217 Huger St. There’s plenty of parking, a great patio, drink specials, and fantastic options for something a little savory to balance out the doughnuts. This will also be the site of the Awards Ceremony.
